Hanuman Chalisa — forty verses, forty paintings
Begin the journeyॐ
May Hanuman ji's grace stay with you.
Begin againThe Hanuman Chalisa is a devotional hymn in praise of Lord Hanuman, the devoted servant of Ram. It is traditionally attributed to the poet-saint Tulsidas and is written in Awadhi. The word chalisa comes from chalis, the Hindi word for forty, because the hymn has forty chaupais (verses). Two dohas (couplets) open the hymn and one closes it.
The verses praise Hanuman's strength, wisdom and devotion, and recall well-known episodes from the Ramayana: his leap across the ocean, his meeting with Sita in Lanka, the burning of Lanka, and the bringing of the Sanjeevani herb to revive Lakshman. Each verse on this site has its own painting, a Hindi text, a roman transliteration and an English meaning.
Many devotees recite the Hanuman Chalisa daily, and Tuesdays and Saturdays are traditionally special days for Hanuman worship. A full recitation takes about five to ten minutes. Read it slowly, with the Hindi text and the English meaning side by side, to follow what each line says.

The Hanuman Chalisa is traditionally attributed to the poet-saint Tulsidas, who also wrote the Ramcharitmanas, a retelling of the Ramayana in Awadhi. He is believed to have lived in the 16th to 17th century.
It has 40 chaupais (verses), which gives the hymn its name, since 'chalis' means forty in Hindi. Two opening dohas (couplets) come before them and one closing doha comes after, so there are 43 parts in total.
It is written in Awadhi, a dialect closely related to Hindi, and is normally printed in the Devanagari script. This site also shows a roman transliteration and an English meaning for every verse.
It is the opening line of the first chaupai and means 'Victory to Hanuman, ocean of wisdom and virtue.'
A full recitation usually takes about five to ten minutes, depending on the pace.
Many devotees recite it daily. Tuesdays and Saturdays are traditionally considered special days for Hanuman worship, and it is also commonly read during difficult times or before beginning something important.
Swipe up or down on a phone, scroll, or use the arrow keys on a computer to move to the next verse. Each of the 40 chaupais has its own painting, and the translate button on the verse card shows the roman transliteration and the story behind the verse.
